The new school year has started, and with it a multitude of activities! And we have decided to try something new: Biking to school!
With the help of some local organization here, SLO Bike Lane, and Rideshare, I was able to obtain a grant for our school that will help offset costs towards having a Bike Rodeo! Yes, Bike Rodeo! It’s part of Monarch Grove Elementary School’s Enrichment Program in which parents are volunteering to set up and run different kids of before or after school programs….from art, and junior rangers, to AM Bike Rides and Chess Club!
Our Bike Rodeo meets every Monday AM, which is our late start Monday in which school doesn’t start until 9:20am. All other days, school starts at 8:20AM. Program will run for six weeks to begin, we will reassess and then start again. This past Monday we had SLO Bike Lane come out and start the program with an engaging presentation in Bike Safety! Which made total sense for the beginning of a bike program! About 16 kids showed up, some with parents. They all received pencils from SLO Bike Lane too!
So the next few weeks are planned with some great events: Making signs for bikes and walkers for International Walk to School Day on October 3rd, making bike T-shirts by actually riding a bike into paint and then onto t-shirts, doing a mini ride around the school, having bike obstacle courses on campus, and then doing a full 40 minute ride around the neighborhood!
I think what is great about this is that even without a program or grant, we are getting outside and making use of our bodies to get from one place to another! We talk about how we are saving gas and helping the environment!
But I do strongly urge anyone interested in starting a Biking program at their school to simply start by asking questions to the school administrators and PTA. Then Find out what local organizations support biking initiatives and go from there. You never know until you ask!
Get out and Ride!!!!
