When I first got pregnant, one of my biggest fears was that I would never be able to get out the door again once the baby was born. No, I’m not talking about the weight gain. I’m talking about the struggle to get the diaper bag packed, the baby becalmed and go to a place where a small child would be welcomed.
As a nonnative to the Monterey Bay/Santa Cruz area who moved just months before my baby’s due date, I had no idea where I should go or what I should do with my child. Were there events? Classes? Museums? What were the parks like? What were the arts like?
So, as befits a journalist, I started to dig and I discovered that the Coast is filled with wonderful experiences. In the land of grown-ups, my discoveries led me to start a local Web arts magazine, Weekend Santa Cruz, where I write stories about everything arts. My experiences with my child have brought me here, to TodaysMama and all of you.
Why should you listen to me? Well, I’m putting my 12 years of professional journalism experience plus my one year of motherhood into this. I’ve written for papers across the country, from the Key West Citizen to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Since I live here on the Coast, I have a vested interest in finding out what fabulousness awaits outside the front door.
Though my kid is still in her early years, your kid may not be, which is why you’ll find postings here for a variety of age ranges. And once in a while, there might even be something date-night oriented.
If ever you feel I’m missing something, feel free to comment and I will try to find out more about it.
I’m looking forward to sharing what I learn with all of you in hopes that it inspires you to take the chance and get out and about.
